My Maternity Experience Through the Cultural Lens

My Maternity Experience Through the Cultural Lens
Let’s Talk for Our Well-being

"All for My Health: My Wealth"

At Utulivu Women’s Group, we believe that empowering communities begins with open conversations about health, well-being, and lived experiences.

Utulivu continues to create safe spaces where women can share their stories, learn from one another, and access information that helps them take control of their health and well-being.

The conversations focus on mental well-being during pregnancy, the importance of support systems, and how culturally informed care can improve maternity outcomes for women from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) communities.

Mental Well-being During and After Pregnancy

Mental health during pregnancy and after childbirth is an important part of overall maternal wellbeing.

Well-being during pregnancy is influenced by several factors, including lifestyle choices, nutrition, stress levels, and how each individual’s body responds to pregnancy.

Self-care during pregnancy should be prioritised even more than usual, as it benefits both the mother and the baby.

These organisations provide information and support for mothers experiencing emotional or mental health challenges during pregnancy and after birth.

Become Part of the Conversation

Through open dialogue, we explore the importance of prioritising mental well-being during and after pregnancy, recognising that lifestyle, nutrition, personal circumstances, and emotional support all play a role in a healthy maternity journey. Insights shared by midwives also help shed light on the realities of labour, birth choices, partner support, and the value of family-centred care.

Participants also identify the need for clearer guidance for expectant mothers, including information on preparing for birth, understanding pregnancy health, and accessing community-based support such as doulas and antenatal classes. These conversations reinforce the importance of creating safe spaces where women can share experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another.

At Utulivu, we believe that meaningful conversations can empower communities and improve wellbeing. We invite you to join our online community conversations every third week of the month, where we continue to explore important topics around health, wellbeing, culture, and lived experiences.

Whether you are expecting a child, supporting someone through pregnancy, or simply interested in learning and sharing, your voice and perspective are welcome. Together, we can continue building a supportive community where knowledge, understanding, and wellbeing are shared.
