Our Approach in Responding to Gender Inequalities within Grassroots Communities

Gender inequality continues to affect the lives of women and girls across many communities, particularly those from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) backgrounds. These inequalities often limit access to healthcare, employment opportunities, education, and social support systems.
Utulivu Women’s Group is a specialist frontline women-led organisation working with BAMER women, girls, and families in Reading and surrounding communities to promote health, safety, and equal access to opportunities.
Through grassroots engagement, culturally informed programmes, and strategic partnerships, Utulivu addresses the underlying causes of gender inequality while empowering women to become leaders and advocates for change in their communities.
Understanding Gender Inequalities at the Grassroots Level
Women in grassroots communities often experience multiple and overlapping inequalities, including:
Gender-based violence and harmful cultural practices
Barriers to accessing healthcare and mental health services
Social isolation and language barriers
Economic exclusion and limited employment opportunities
Limited representation in leadership and decision-making
These challenges contribute to wider health inequalities, where certain groups experience poorer health outcomes due to social and economic disadvantage.
Addressing these disparities requires community-based solutions that build trust, empower individuals, and strengthen community resilience.

Empowerment Through Skills and Opportunities
Economic empowerment is essential in addressing gender inequality. Many women face barriers to employment due to language challenges, limited qualifications, or lack of access to training. Utulivu supports women through: Skills development programmes, Digital literacy training, Health and social care courses, Volunteering and employment opportunities. Training initiatives help women build confidence, gain qualifications, and access meaningful employment pathways.
Building Stronger and Healthier Communities
At Utulivu, we believe that lasting change begins within communities themselves. By empowering women, strengthening social networks, and addressing the root causes of inequality, we help create communities where women and girls can live safely, confidently, and with equal opportunities. Through continued collaboration, education, and community leadership, Utulivu remains committed to promoting health, equality, and wellbeing for all.
